DID NOT ATTEND GALLERY - WENT TO EXHIBITS FOR 30 MINUTES
Session 1: 10:30 - 11:30 AM Room 11 Title: It's Not Your Old Lesson Plan: Creating Effective Digital Lessons Presenter: Gayle Owens, Assist. Dept. Chairman, American College of Education Description: Learn to create effective, standards-based, personalized online lessson that foster critical thinking and provide instant formative assessment using best practices for digital learning.
The Journey
19th Century - one room schoolhouses
20th C - brick and motar institution with required seat time in classrooms
21st C - anywhere, anytime
Now days all our students havre access to all sorts of information, anytime, anywhere.
Kids are connected. They want everything connected now.
"boredom is probably the greatest challenge in schools." vander ark, 2012
Example; 7th grader puts all her PLN using symbaloo, she organizes her school stuff and personal stuff, she checks her class agenda, see video recorded, Wendy Dexter?? Check on the name and student sample
We need to work on getting the critical thinking / questioning
John Hattie, Visible Learning - how educators impact learning, book resources
Do you know your students? Need to understand the student
Helping students to take control of their learning
Helping student integrate superficial knowledge with deep understanding
Universal Design for Learning www.cast.com (see movie recorded)
Common Core Standards - Hunts Institiute on YouTube
Example of using CCS and UDL - used a matrix in excel to write out the standards and then used the three column and came up with ideas for meeting the UDL design
Resource: Marzano, The art and science of teaching, 2007
Students need to know up front what they need or will be learning.
Switch out what students will be learning in parent friendly language to help their child.
Have a graph/map with questions leading from broad questions to narrowing. (see pictures) Have these questions for the students and they can pick for a research or for their own learning
Teachers like to talk. commonly about 70% of the time the teacher is talking. Higher the grade, the more talking the teacher does

What is a QR? quick response code, 2D barcode, can store much more information than traditaional barcode, free to use
Deices to Read QR Code: smartphone with camera, iPad or tablet w camera, webcam
APPs for iPhone/iPad: QRAFTER (pro), i-Nigma, Red Laser,
Things to Do with: calendar events, contact information, URL, email, geo location, text, phone number
How can we apply in education?
High School Examples: contact info teacher
Example:
organization by putting code on the supplies, like smart board pens, just scan and then you'll know who's supply item it is.
Virtual fieldtrips - for historical sites
Gourmet Foods - video of her lesson plan for absent students,
Vocabulary Lists - teacher would record her voice for language for second language, for science questions and then check their answers by scanning QR codes
School Informtion: placed sticker with code on students supplies or lockers to inform them of stuff coming up, like events
Chemistry: QR code for each table of elements with information / videos of the elemen, teacher has a whole hallway with big poster of the table of elements
Ideas for Next Year: Google voice, allows a phone number for the kids to call and then assess their language. They can speak
Elementary School - Patricia
Literature: book reviews, attached to inside of book, students relfections of the book, reading books that students take home, suppliementa for thr reader, some books even are made with the QR codes in the book with information of the pictures or the author or the story (IDEA: do with science books for kids who want to know more about animals). (IDEA: codes in the books example Around the World in 80 Days, codes take them to the actual history site
Science: model of a skeleton and scan the code for more information, diagram of a plant, more information about the plant, scan the model and get more video or info
History: pictures of the historic idea, like Rosa Parks, then have more information. Or have students make a information movie about the site and then record. Put that on the QR code. At a parent event, they were able to scan and see their students projects or research that they did using QR Code, posted on YouTube but made sure she took off the voting and comments. (IDEA: use for kohala with 4th grade or with plants around campus)
Amazing Race - students went on a field trip. Parents would be located at certain places and the students would scan and get their task at the site.
Morning News Show QR Codes: they used to advertise the science expo, they would put it on the website and the remind how many more days of the events, advertise for events at school
Science Explo with QR Codes: famous scientists
Survey Says - used for reflections for teachers or parents or students, it would take it to a survey. she would put in teacher box, they scan and then took survey
Fundraising with QR Codes - advertise for events
Assessment - google forms, create assessment, create URL, put into QR Code
Pictures - teacher took pictures and up on server for students, the students took pictures to recap for the year, then the students made a video, uploaded to YouTube, made code, sent home for parents to see about their year.
Elementary - Jason Seliskar, 4th grade Teacher
Resource movie: Innovated Ways to Use QR Codes
See movie of grocery store using QR codes
Scan from the Desktop QRSight -
Books Review,
Teacher Tutorials
Classroom Walls - QR codes of lots of information or events, etc.
Homework Log - link for the parents to go to calandar, or maybe tutorial, if students didn't write it down
Back to School - open house information, google form for parents to fill in as they ge to the class, they scan and find class list, QR code with teacher informtion
School Events / Infor - Posted a tred with QR codes on events
Video Tutorials - Khan Academy for soources that are online
IDEA: have video of lesson, like math, make into QR code, put on blog, have kids watch before class, then do again in class and practice, up on blog for review whenthey go home to practice
Resource: GoAnimate
Business cards:
Grave stone: put a QR about the person of the person and put on the grave stone, memorial
Why QR Codes
promotes active engagement
teacher is the facilitator
Student-directed instruction
provides instant feedback
brings the outside world in instananeously

Session #3 2:00 - 3:00 pm Room 20CD Title: Education in the Age of Mobilism: The Inevitable Transformation of K-12 Classrooms Presenter: Cathleen Norris, Mobilist, Regent Professor, U of North Texas
Elliot Soloway, Professor, Univ. of Michigan Description: Mobile devices will catalyze the classroom tranformation from "I Teach," a teacher-centric pedogogy to "We Learn," a student-centric digital age pedagogy.
This guy is funny and very upbeat, gonna love it I think.
Big Change; Huge Change
started with the iPhone by Steve Jobs
"Apple has move money than the government.". Cathleen quote
Mobile tech uptatek fastest ever!!
Post - PC Era ---> Age of Mbilism
Defining Characterisitics: 1 Connectedness - all the time, everywhere; 2 Affordable - By everyone; 3 Global - cross cultural - cross everything!
CHanging the way we live. Change in kids, no toys or rattles but ipads and iphones
What different about k-12?
Why hasn't new tech changed everything?
Other industries have changed, like cameras.
New Tech + Old Process = incremental change
new Tech + New Process = DISRUPTIVE Change
Education: Old Pedagogy - marry to - new Tech = 1:1
New pedagogy & curriculum is needed after the two are married together.
What is the curicullujm and pedagogy that goes with this new form?
Unrealistice Expectations
-Helicopter Tech In + PD = BINGO ....But no BINGO
-New Tech + 4 teachers = great stuff
-New Tech + 40 teachers = disaster
WHY: Piloti HIDs Key Factors: lack of curricullu and real change in pedagogy
Learn by Doing, John Dewey, (see picture of slide quote from book)
How do we suppor the everyday working teacher with a new pedagogy with technology? Do a learn by doing pedagogy ...how do we get teachers to be artisan teachers?
Resource: @Nan Chiau Primary
The Human Side @ Nan Chiau Primary, Singapore
See picture of slide
Talking about their pilot project with one classroom of 40 students at this school. Only got one class from Singapore because school didn't want their test scores to go down just in case pilot didn't work.
Students were given mobile devices. Researchers were given the the curriculum of the science for this class. They had to come up with the curriculum and pedagoogy with using the phones.
Example: plant system, how things grow and the students would check on their phone. Do what they can't do by using writing and paper. They would use their phones for that extra content help. It's like the using mobility as a supplement for the curriculum?????
Arguement: Teachers to need to do learn by doing but it is hard to do. How do we do it?
By using the mobile devices
The Key is that the kids have more reesponsibilty for doing by finding the information. They have the resources, the mobile device. Take learning into their hands. They can go out and find the answers.
Mobile Technologies enable: essential use and ownership
When you give them devices they write better and write more. Paper and pencial always used to ask how many lines and how many words, etc. But now the students have many formats to show their learning.
Benefit for students is cognitive. The students had sources they could go to. More they did it, the more they would do it. They had access to it.
Essential Use (see picture)
1. Cognitive: direct and immediate acces to information, events, locations, data
2. Learn in Context
3. All the time; everywhere learning
4. Mobile devices are not just computers
Children are using taught the answers. Mobiblity allows them to create their own meaning.
It's the WE learn. The teacher is learning along with the kids. As kids talk with other classmates and with teacher, they share their findings. Teacher can learn from the students who find their own sources for answers.
Benefits: have other features than laptops, like GPS, accelerators, compass, in the future probably sensory
Now you can even coordinate with watches that take heart beat that will sync with iphones. for PE?
Recovering from the Successful Pilot
1. Science: 1 teacher to 6 teachers (350 3rd graders)
2. English: 2 teachers (120 3rd graders)
Researchers + Curriculum Developers + HELP! They are in the clases as well to help the teachers
IT'S WORKING - most of the time
Scaling Up:
Deep (Pedagogy First) vs. Shallowe (teach first)
Shallow is easy, but how affective is it on the learning?
(See picture of prediction for future)
Change will Happen
Intergalactice Mobile Learning Center, The University of Michigan and the University of North Texas
(see picture) the software is free for those who want it. Just have to contact them. Though its a windows Phone 7
PC - Windows 7
Androids - Classroom-in-a-Box: collaborative software. Something like googledocs for kids at elementary
iOS - can be used with iPad, iPhone, Touch; collaborative concept mapping and collaborative KWL, these will be made into apps for available, save concept map by the students and teacher can send back with feedback
contact them if you want to be a part of the pilot and use the software, the software is free you would only have to buy the devices, they are working out fo the university
may make Atomic videos, sample levels, starting with science, training will be available
It's just taking the old way (concept map, KWL) and making it mobile and collaborative for students and teacher
Will the portal be free all the time? As long as they have funding.
Will it work with mixed, like laptops, macs, windows? Yes, trying to make compadible with all devices for students who have BYOD. That way not all has to have macs or all pc.
